Stucco Installation/Repair FAQs

Can you clean stucco?

No, not very well. Because of porosity in stucco, dirt and pollutants become impregnated in stucco over time and cannot be removed effectively.

Can stucco be painted?

  • Yes. Stucco can be painted but there are a few important things to be aware of; When stucco is initially being applied you can opt for a coloured finish to meet your desired look. In the future if you’d like to change the colour of your stucco, the traditional method is to re-stucco the surface in the new colour however this obviously isn’t as cost-effective as painting. Should you decide to paint on top of stucco it’s important to understand that you cannot stucco over paint which may become an issue if cracks or repairs are necessary. It is generally not recommended to paint your stucco.

Can I change the color of my stucco with your process?

Yes. You can change your stucco to almost any color. We can help you do so with both color samples and color-matching. We have changed the color of countless homes.

Can I change the color of my stucco with your process?

Yes. You can change your stucco to almost any color. We can help you do so with both color samples and color-matching. We have changed the color of countless homes.

What colors are available?

We can produce any color or color shade that you desire. The only exceptions are ultra-ultra deep tones and shades of color.

Can you match colors?

Yes, we can match all colors. Several exceptions do exist. It is extremely difficult to do so if the home or structure is covered in old, raw cement, the surface appearance is too inconsistent to match, or the surface has been painted with glossy paints.

Can you match textures?

Yes. There is no problem in doing so. We are the most experienced company in matching textures and consider the craft of texture-matching one of our main strengths.

Can you fix cracks?

Yes we can. Normally we fix cracks when we are performing a recoating job and changing the color. Most hairline cracks are not serious. If the structure has been previously painted, the cracks are usually in the material that was used during painting and not in the stucco. This has been true in most of the cases that we have seen.

If I have my home stucco recoated now, can an addition to the home be matched to the stucco recoating 3 to 5 years later?

Yes. We can match an addition to your home. The only variable is the age of stucco. Stucco becomes dirty and oxidizes as it ages. The best way is to avoid this is to first complete all of your remodeling work and then stucco coat everything, if possible. A patch or other stucco work 3 to 5 years later may have a slightly lighter or cleaner appearance “out of the can” when first applied.

What is the difference between cement stucco and Dryvit?

Cement stucco is basically cement exterior plaster and has been in use for over 8000 years. Most older homes have cement stucco applied on them. EIFS or Dryvit product has been around in the US for approximately 30 years. It is a thin synthetic skin over Styrofoam. According to experts, Dryvit was never intended for wood frame construction because of the likelihood of trapping moisture. It is intended only for masonry applications. One advantage of Dryvit is that trim can be done with it. Real cement stucco is only for the “field” or all surfaces other than trim.

Do you use EIFS, synthetic stucco or Dryvit products?

No. We did for a short period of time but will never use these again. There are too many durability and moisture problems associated with these products. We only use and apply traditional cement stucco.

How long does a stucco job last?

Our stucco work is usually good for 15 to 20 years, depending on environmental conditions. Some colors that do not show dirt may have a longer life and are more maintenance-free.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. We have a 5-year guarantee against stucco cracks, breaks, peeling, flaking, bulging, blistering or stucco falling off.

Is there a square – foot price?

Yes. But it is determined by each situation. The price can vary by many factors including; thickness, texture, height of job, size of job, proximity to our warehouse, application and scaffolding required. For a more exact price, please contact us for a free estimate.

Do You Do Repairs on Stucco or EIFS?

Unlike many other so called stucco inspectors in the area, I do not make repairs myself and I’m are not affiliated with any repair companies. These type inspectors can overstate problems with your stucco system so that the repair bill can be inflated. We do however have lists of competent stucco repair contractors we can refer you to if needed.

How do you estimate work on existing stucco homes?

After receiving your call or e-mail, we will arrange a site survey. We normally price work for repair or patching if there are isolated areas. If the work requires extensive patching or if the home has extensive damage, a simple repair order is not appropriate. We will then give an estimate based on repair and a total recoating of the entire home/ structure. On occasion, we have seen severe peeling paint problems. In these instances, we recommend recoating the entire home to properly fix and remedy this type of damage. We price on a per-job basis and will never estimate what we cannot see.

How do you estimate work on new construction?

We estimate our work from blueprints or from a new structure that has been recently built. Again- we price on a per-job basis and will never estimate what we cannot see.

What is your territory?

We cover most of the Saskatoon and surrounding areas.

Why is plaster more expensive than drywall?

Plaster takes more labor, material, and skill to install than drywall. It is also a much higher quality product in terms of its strength, longevity, insulation, sound proofing, fire rating and appearance.

How long do I have to wait to paint new plaster?

It depends on a lot of different factors such as temperature, airflow, and the thickness of the plaster.

Can I paint the metal or plastic pieces (corner beads) that are showing through the plaster?

Yes you can.

Will my insurance company pay for repair costs?
